Low 'E' glass

All double-glazing now fitted in a new build is required to have fitted a low emission glass, e.g. Pilkington K glass, which has a low emissive (Low E) coating to the glass that allows heat into the building but prevents it from leaving.

What is double-glazing?

Double-glazing is now one of the most popular standard fittings on modern window replacement today. Whether it be Commercial or Residential properties almost every new-build has double glazing as standard.

It can be fitted into any frame mainly UPVC, wood or aluminium, and as the name states, instead of having a single piece of glass double-glazing uses two, the two pieces of glass are separated by a spacer bar, which in turn is filled with little desiccant balls to absorb all the moisture, then a sealant is poured in between the two panes to make a seal. On most occasions there is no need to change the window you can just change the glass.

The main reason for a double glazed unit to breakdown is water-moisture in the frame and ultra violet rays. Double glazed units don’t have any specific time span, but if fitted correctly should last between 5 and 20 years.

Heat loss and sound reduction are the main reasons that customers change to double glazing over the years. Our homes can lose up to 30% of their heat through the windows with single glazing, but the double layer of glass prevents much of the heat escaping, which in turn saves you money on your heating bills.
